Definitions of lessons and personal thoughts:

  1. Private/Personal lesson - one on one 60 minutes instruction for a single individual or one couple. Private lessons are the key to your dance success. It is very important for a beginner dancer to develop the right foundation, aliments and balance. We all have different body structure, height, arm, leg length ..etc.. and only trained Professionals can make it fit. No group class, tape, TV Show will give you that. To avoid frustrations and injuries later private lessons are the best option for beginner or advanced dancer.
  2. Semiprivate lesson - 60 minutes instruction for two or three couples. Small group of people and personal attention makes it the second most valuable option for you and your friends. If you are on the tight budget, semiprivate lessons are the BEST value for your money. Bring your friends and relatives and save.
  3. Group lesson - 60 minutes instruction for four couples and up. This is the cheapest option on the dance market, but least effective. The value of a group class for social dancer is around 10% (you get what you paid for) and if information is not repeated, it gets forgotten, keeping you in a dead circle of learning. If the group class is done as an addition to Private and Practice it's value rises to 30%- 35%.

Now You decide which option better suits you.

Other thoughts - Practice and self discipline are the most important ingredients in your dance education. Setting up goals and understanding what's ahead will help you to get there faster. How often do you need to take private lessons? Nobody can tell. It depends on multiple factors. If you want to be a good social dancer and you can dedicate 15-30 minutes of your time everyday to practice by yourself or with your partner, I'd recommend to take at least 2-3 private lessons a week for beginner dancers to achieve something in the next 3 month. The success will NOT happen overnight, but with the right approach and understanding what it takes to be a good dancer, I can guarantee you results at the end. It's all up to you...see you on the dance floor.
